We went through the types of health conditions that can be helped with this approach. Dr. Willow shared with us the process of how she approaches a new patient who is suffering and why their healing can happen within a couple days. What is the latest technology in breast cancer detection with CEO and chemist Elizabeth Cormier-May.

Have you or a female friend recently gone through a mammogram as part of yearly testing? Did you or your friend feel discomfort or have complaints about the process? For this week’s episode of the Weekend Wellness Hour Show, we interviewed CEO and chemist Elizabeth Cormier-May about mammograms and the importance of testing for breast cancer. Elizabeth shared with us her novel approach that is now being tested through pilot studies that allows for easy detection of cancer markers. Elizabeth began her career as a medicinal chemist focusing on ways to discover cancer in its early stages. She decided to change into diagnostics to have a greater impact in women’s lives. We first discussed some of the issues with mammograms that are a barrier to them being performed on a regular basis for women aged 40 year and older. We explored the issue of false positives and the difficulty of detection for those with dense breast tissue. We also touched on the lack of accessibility to mammograms for those in more rural areas and how that led Elizabeth to search for other ways to provide a screening test. She began working with Mammogen, a female-led biotechnology company that uses the proprietary genTRU™ liquid biopsy platform. Elizabeth explained the premise of liquid biopsy and went into the technology that allows for the detection cancer markers in saliva and blood. She discussed how cancer leads to changes in our RNA so their technology detects those biomarker changes that are in our body fluids. This process allows for women all over the world who have little access to healthcare clinics to be able to receive a test kit in the mail and do a saliva swab to determine if she has cancer markers that warrant a mammogram or further testing. It helps remove the barriers to testing like discomfort from a mammogram or poor detection due to dense breast tissue. Mammogen is currently doing pilot studies in various areas around the United States to provide more solid data to back up their initial highly successful results. Part of their work is to make this affordable and accessible to all, even those who are younger with a history of breast cancer in the family. Elizabeth has been in the biotechnology industry for nearly 20 years. As well as leading Mammogen, Liz is also the CCO of IV Bioholdings; a bio innovation studio that conceives, creates and develops first-in-category RNA bio platforms which radically improve the detection, diagnosis and treatment of disease. Currently, she is Chairman of the Board, Co-Founder, President and CEO of her digital health start-up, Persona Health, Inc. and CEO and Board Director of Mammogen, Inc. Of the 42 ways minors bully other minors, he mentioned that exclusion and sextortion are the two biggest tactics used nowadays. He gave examples of how minors implement this to torment others for acceptance from others. We went through some solutions for stopping cyberbullying including educating children at a young age. He encouraged everyone to discuss keeping personal information private and even urges parents to encourage more children to become upstanders, those who try to stop cyberbullying by notifying adults of this occurring. More is needed to address this as Dr. Nuccitelli pointed out the cyberbullycide is becoming more prevalent. This includes depression and suicide. They also combined principles of Aryuvedic medicine and sound to provide healing for balance, creativity, transformation, strength and stability. We discussed two important styles of healing sound: binaural beats and isochronic pulse. Dr. Gold explained the differences between these two types of sounds and how they help brainwave frequencies synchronize with the beats to induce a dream-like state. Dr. Gold mentioned the new research emerging around 40Hz, a frequency that is showing promising results for those suffering from Alzheimers, fibromyalgia and Parkinson’s disease. The thought is that this specific frequency might improve blood and energy flow in the brain while reducing inflammation. We spoke about the various brainwave states that we experience daily and why these sounds can help us move from one brain state to another to produce relaxation. Dr. Gold even has music that can take people on a brain journey to move them from state to state. Dr. Richard Gold is also a licensed acupuncturist and holds a Doctorate in Psychology. How does your ability to move affect your socialization skills with Dr. Cole Galloway

Did you know that your brain development is highly dependent on your mobility? And that this affects babies and their ability to socialize? We talked about these concepts and more in this week’s episode of the Weekend Wellness Hour Show with scientist and researcher Dr. Cole Galloway. Dr. Galloway shared his progression into research using robotics to help babies move at 4-6 months of age. He discovered how brain activity increases when babies have an active participation in their movement through their environment versus passively being moved by another person. Dr. Galloway expressed the importance of this finding for social development. We discussed how this led to the Go Baby Go, a 300 chapter international research, education and advocacy movement -- where he invents and studies devices for children and adults with severe mobility issues. He explained how many parents begged for little cars for their infants so that their children with physical disabilities could develop social skills. Dr. Galloway shared how this research has led to much media attention from CNN to the discover channel to more. This has helped him raise awareness of mobility as a human right. He is currently working with Toyota for production of these little robotic cars for babies with disabilities but finds challenges with companies not wanting to take on the legal challenges of babies operating robots. What is the Quantum Medicine and why is it important for our mental health with Dr. Cristine Price

When you aren’t feeling well, do you ever consider that there may be different types of medical solutions for your illness? When it comes to your mental health, have you considered a spiritual or quantum type of solution? We discussed quantum medicine in this week’s episode of the Weekend Wellness Hour Show with Dr. Cristine Price. Dr. Price has a Master’s degree in psychology but received her doctorate in natural medicine when she realized that there were additional solutions for mental health disorders. Dr. Price shared with us her background with her own addictions to drugs and mental health struggles. As she worked on solutions for her own illness, she discovered new career pathways that allowed her to approach mental illness from a healing perspective instead of just treatment. We discussed what Dr. Price calls the 4 bodies and the 4 medicines. We went through the wellness diamond and each part of it including the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Dr. Price explains that for each of the four bodies, there is the corresponding same type of medicine. She expressed her concerns that we often don’t use the correct medicine type for the ailment which leads to problems persisting longer than they should. We went through examples of people needing both physical medicine and energy work to clear out an emotional problem tied to a body pain. She also explained the need for quantum medicine in the form of spiritual meditation or frequency drops that tap into spiritual healing. Dr. Price mentioned this approach can help with depression and anxiety as well as personality disorders. She encouraged those seeking help form a healthcare provider to explore all four types of medicines for solutions. Cristine trains quantum practitioners in a holistic approach to healing, addressing the spirit, mind, and body. She is the author of 4 Bodies: 4 Medicines along with other publications. Her modalities, including Quantum Wholeness Meditation and The Complete EFT Method, have been accredited internationally. How do tiny habits improve your health with coach and entrepreneur Tony Winyard

Do you realize that your life is made up of habits? They dictate how you behave, how you feel, and even how you think. We discussed habit development and formation for this week’s Episode of the Weekend Wellness Hour Show with habits coach and entrepreneur Tony Winyard. Tony is a Tiny Habits certified coach who owns a business working with individuals who want to change their health habits. Tony started his adulthood as a DJ traveling around the world playing for clubs and events. He changed his focus as a result of some changes in his personal and family life and started studying health, mindset and habit formation. We discussed what is meant by “tiny” habits and why it’s important to make small changes to achieve a new habit. Tony explained that this idea came from the work of BJ Fogg, a behavior scientist, who wrote the book, Tiny Habits, the Small Changes that Change Everything. We also touched on the idea that habits don’t need to be practiced for a certain amount of time before they can be classified as a habit. He noted that many researchers now don’t believe that you must perform something for 21 or 90 days before it becomes a habit. Tony shared that there needs to be motivation to start a new habit, but it doesn’t always have to be at a high amount if you have the skills to perform the habit easily. If you don’t have the skills; however, then motivation needs to be higher. We spoke about the important of health habits, especially those related to sleep and breathing. He stressed the importance of getting outside right after you wake to improve your sleep habits and reset your circadian rhythm. Tony offers workshops to help people change their health habits to feel and move better. Please join us to learn how you can begin to change your health habits bit by bit!! What happens to your body when you travel by plane with Dr. Patti Milligan

Did you know that all types of travel are disruptive to your body? Have you experienced fatigue after flying and wondered why? This past weekend for the Weekend Wellness Hour Show, we discussed what happens to our body when we travel on airplanes, trains and vehicles with Dr. Patti Milligan. Dr. Milligan has been in the field of natural medicine for more than 35 years as a functional medicine nutritionist and is fascinated with the impact of travel on the body’s changing nutritional needs. We first discussed how flying on a plane dehydrates the body and impacts our saliva. She mentioned that the circulating air lacks moisture in addition to the tendency to restrict liquids in attempt to avoid using the restroom. Dr. Milligan also expressed the negative impact of flying on our nervous system in that it puts us in fight or flight mode in many ways. One way she mentioned is through the jet engine noise vibrations that affect our bodies on the cellular level. We also explored the idea of travel fatigue which shows up in the days after traveling. She cited some researchers who study the body’s response to travel whether it’s a short flight, long flight or traveling east-to-west or west-to-east. Dr. Milligan provided some solutions to minimize the fatigue and improve body resilience during travel. She suggested several foods that can be consumed to improve saliva production. We looked at the differences between flights vs train travel vs road trips. Each mode of transportation is jarring to the body and recovery is needed. Dr. Milligan founded the company Jet Renewal Kit and shared with us how she helps clients support their body when traveling. We went into the basics of the 5 main types: generators, manifestors, manifesting generator, projectors and reflectors. Katie described the aura of each of these types to give us an idea of how each shows up and influences energy in a room or environment. We then explored the inner authority of each of these types. Generators, for example, tend to respond where as manifestors inform. We then discussed how the signature is what each type is looking to enjoy in various aspects of life. We discussed the benefit of ketamine in its role to form new connections in the brain to allow patients to view their past or their trauma in a new light. She also noted that it’s a bit easier on the body in terms of responses to the medication and side effects, and the sessions are typically of shorter duration, ranging from 30 minutes to 20 hours, depending on the method of intake. She advised that anyone using this medication take 24 hours to recover and avoid using heavy machinery, including driving. We also discussed her role as a therapist while someone undergoes this treatment. She stressed the importance of therapy in the 24-48 hours after taking ketamine to guide a person to form new brain connections to lift him or her out of the depression. She also explained that this form of treatment, similar to all others, is dependent on the individual with some only needing 1-2 sessions but others needing more. She described a typical dosage as being 6 treatments spaced out 1-2 times per week, but studies are currently looking at the benefit of 12 doses. Leah has a private practice in Florida and is also a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC), a Certified Bioenergetic Therapist (CBT), a Certified Adoption Competent Counselor, a Licensed practitioner of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), and a Certified Forensic Mental Health Evaluator (CFMHE). Sleep is critical to our health and wellbeing, but we often take it for granted until we develop insomnia or another sleep disorder. How to relieve your stress with Emotional Brain Training with founder Dr. Laurel Mellin

When we experience stress, we are typically charged up with emotions that can lead us to becoming stuck. We lose our ability to think through things rationally and we lose the ability to be creative. This can persist for long periods of time unless we seek help or have tools that allow us to shift out of that state. To explore this topic more, for this week's episode of the Weekend Wellness Hour Show, we discussed emotional brain training (EBT) with Dr. Laurel Mellin. Dr. Mellin developed this technique to help clients learn how to process emotional stress instead of suppressing it. Dr. Mellin shared with us why and how she developed this tool when she found traditional psychotherapy methods to be ineffective. She described how the question "how do I feel" is often used to assess a person's state but that it doesn't work if the brain is stuck. She described the 5 brain states of stress and how we would like to be in stage 1 of happiness and joy but we often fall into stages 3-5 which leads to emotional or stress reactivity. We touched on emotional intelligence and emotional resilience and how we need these skills to navigate the world and its ups and downs. Dr. Mellin takes us through an exercise of her EBT so we can see how this quick 2 minute process shifted her from some anger into peace. It was quite powerful to watch her change emotions over the course of a few minutes. Dr. Mellin is a health psychologist, associate professor of family and community medicine at UCSF and New York Times bestselling author. She has been a guest of Oprah’s for three programs, and is an activist for empowering people to use EBT to raise their brain’s set point and spread more love and joy in the world. Please join us to learn how this tool can unstick our brain within minutes! Please feel free to reach out to Dr. Laurel Mellin by her email: laurel@ebt.org or at her website, EBT.ORG to get her app for spiraling up.

How toxic stress in childhood can transfer to adulthood and through generations with Dr. Mahdi Brown

We often hear about the resiliency of children and how they can "bounce back" from anything. New research is coming out that refutes that saying and suggests that trauma that we experience in our earliest years can impact us and how we handle stress as adults. For this week's episode of the Weekend Wellness Hour Show, Dr. Mahdi Brown joined us to discuss how toxic stress impacts the brain and how it can affect us long term. Dr. Mahdi battled burnout while in medical school and worked to overcome it so he could help others. He has studied the chemical changes in the brain that result from stressors in our lives. We discussed several scientific studies that demonstrate the impact of various types of stress on humans or animals at a young age and how it shows up later in life. What's incredible is the evidence that stress is showing up now at the genetic level and is being passed from generation to generation through DNA. Dr. Mahdi shares his top ideas on how to alleviate stress by looking at the spirit, mind, emotions, body, relationships, contribution, and environment. This work is embodied in what he calls the ỌKAN Journey. Dr. Brown is the founder of ỌKAN International and helps High-Level Entrepreneurs, C-Suite Executives, and Professional Athletes recover from Chronic Stress & Burnout and bring their best energy to their work and reach their highest potential in life. How to address immobility in your organs through visceral manipulation with Veronika Campbell, PT, MPT, CSCS, NSC, CNMP

Our organs are vital to our wellbeing but we often don't give them a second thought until we have an issue with them or develop a condition or disease. They can have restrictions just like other parts of our bodies, namely joints, muscles, etc. The mobility of our organs is important for their functioning and when they lack freedom to move, we can develop pain in various parts of our body. There is a treatment available for this called visceral manipulation. For the Weekend Wellness Hour show, I interviewed Veronika Campbell, PT, MPT, CSCS, NSC, CNMP, to discuss this unique approach to relieving bodily pain through visceral manipulation. Veronika has been a manual physical therapist for over 20 years and has extensive advanced training in the Barral approach to visceral, vascular, and neural manipulation. We discussed how daily life activities involving inflammation, trauma or accidents can lead to organs being bound up by the fascia tissue that surrounds them. Veronika also describes the wide variety of conditions this type of treatment helps. Veronika also has certifications as a strength and conditioning specialist, nutrition specialist, and neural manipulation practitioner. She has also been an adjunct faculty member at Midwestern University and Franklin Pierce University since 2010 and often teaches about this approach. How to determine if you have food sensitivities with Nutritional Practitioner, Linda Downey

We know that sometimes when we eat certain foods, we feel off. It can be hard to pinpoint which foods contribute to these sensations, especially if our meals consist of a variety of ingredients. To help us understand this issue, I interviewed Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, Integrative Health Practitioner/Coach and Personal Trainer, Linda Downey. We discussed what happens when inflammation in our gut allows it to leak food into our blood stream. This can lead to symptoms of food sensitivities when we eat specific foods. Linda explains the different between a whole food sensitivity test and a zoomers test that breaks down the food into the different peptides to see if there are specific components of the food to which you are sensitive. We go through her sensitivity test and she explains how it is important to understand that common foods we are sensitive to can show up in other products like shampoo or adhesives. We discuss some of the common symptoms like brain fog, joint pain and migraines. Some symptoms don't even show up until a couple days after you eat that specific food! Linda underwent her own personal health journey in her 20's, 30's and 40's as she suffered from Ulcerative Colitis, Lyme's disease, Grave's disease and Hashimoto's disease. She was determined to find out what happened to her body and how to fix or control these issues. She has been working to repair her gut to allow her to eat certain foods again without reactions. How to care for your joints and the latest advances in joint replacements with Dr. Michael Sumko

As we get older, we often attribute our aches and pains to arthritis, typically osteoarthritis. There are times when the wear and tear gets so bad that you lose all the cartilage in your joint and it becomes "bone-on-bone." Conservative treatment options are typically used first to help avoid a joint replacement and many of these options are successful. Recently a client of the PABR Institute canceled a hip replacement due to the work with did using the PABR method. Unfortunately, there are times when a joint replacement is needed. That's when you want a surgeon who is highly skilled, caring, attentive to detail and who works with you on your goals. This past weekend for the Weekend Wellness Hour show, I interviewed just that type of surgeon, Dr. Michael Sumko. We discussed indications for knee and hip replacements as well as indications for revisions of those surgeries. Dr. Sumko discussed minimally invasive options as well as robotics that are now used in surgeries. We even discussed patient optimization to ensure greater success with these major operations. Dr. Sumko is the chief of orthopedics at Tempe St. Lukes Hospital in Tempe, Arizona and is the Medical Director of Quality and Cost Efficiency.  He served at the VA and is soon to be a clinical associate of Arizona State University.  He was nominated and named as a Healthcare Hero in 2017 and is joint fellowship trained by Tony Hedley in less invasive approaches to hip and knee replacement as well as revision surgeries.  Dr. Sumko is a wealth of knowledge in this field and I've personally seen his surgical technique in the operating room!  Please join us for this conversation to learn more how to help your joints, how to determine if you need to see an orthopedic surgeon like him and how to change your lifestyle to improve your life and wellbeing! How to cook with plants to make your meals more nutritious with chef and holistic health coach, Lisa Lyne

We know our diet is critical to our health. So many physicians and nutritionists talk about the gut microbiome nowadays and how what we feed ourselves determine the bacteria, fungi, and other organisms that live in our gut and allow us to absorb nutrients. One consistency in the health and nutrition world is eating more plants, especially a diverse variety of plants. Diving into plant-based cooking can be overwhelming and daunting if you are not a cook or if you haven't used plants much in cooking before. This past weekend for the Weekend Wellness Hour show, I interviewed Lisa Lyne to explore easier ways to incorporate plants into our daily cooking and meals. Lisa is a chef, gardener, storyteller, holistic health coach, certified cycling instructor, gym rat, vegan, avid reader, friend of all animals and lover of good food and wine. She graduated from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition ten years ago. While attending classes at IIN, she also completed a Culinary Arts program through the State University of Brockport in NY. She became vegan because she felt it was the right thing to do for the animals, the planet, and her body. Her goal is to motivate people to eat more delicious plant-based foods and help them navigate the vegan world. We discuss some common ideas that cause people to avoid plant-based cooking, whether it's not enough protein or becoming hungry too often to not getting enough vitamin B12. Lisa has suggestions for all of these fears and we go into some ideas for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Please join us for this conversation to learn more how to incorporate more plants into your cooking to improve your life and wellbeing! Join us on this delicious journey! How to Improve your health and wellness through nature and the outdoors with Dr. Amy Novotny

Nature has so many roles in our lives and has the ability to heal us. This past weekend for the Weekend Wellness Hour show, I spoke on the healing power of nature from Crystal Lake in Ouray, Colorado following a volunteer trip for the nonprofit Arizona Highways PhotoScapes. I share how nature can make us more present through our five senses: touch, sight, small, taste and hearing. When we are brought back to our senses, we stop living in our minds where we make up stories that fill us with self-doubt and fear. We can exercise in nature to improve our fitness and force us to breathe differently and use our lungs in a greater capacity. The fresh air provides us many health benefits even if there is some pollution because we are getting out of our houses where many home products give off gases, as discussed last week with Loni Brown. I also cover how nature can bring out our creativity through photography, drawing, painting and more. It can stimulate us or calm us down. My fascination with nature that started as a child grew into a Bachelor's of Science in biology as well as an honors thesis in ecology that was published in the scientific journal, Oecologia. I then explored the amazing outdoors through trail ultramarathons up to 100 miles and landscape and nature photography, some of which have been featured in galleries and chosen as National Geographic's Top Photo of the Day! Please join me for this conversation as I touch on even more about the healing power of nature and how it can improve your life and wellbeing! She found so many items in our homes that harm our air and could have long term effects on our health. The Four Pillars of Health and Wellness with Dr. Scott Gamm

Wellness is such an elusive and complex topic. There is so much information out there about the "one thing" to do to fix your health. Rather than focusing on one quick fix, why not look at several areas of health to improve our wellness. This past weekend for the Weekend Wellness Hour show, I interviewed 20+ year chiropractor and founder of Vitalism Code, Dr. Scott Gamm. We discussed how symptoms that we feel are the way our body communicates to us that something is wrong and needs to be fixed. Dr. Gamm also shares with us four pillars of health that have to be addressed simultaneously to achieve wellness in totality. He begins by describing how we can develop greater control over our body and the outside triggers that drive our urges. He describes how to create a gap between an outside stimulus (like we are hungry) and the immediate actions we typically take (eating something sugary to quell that hunger) so we don't act based on urges that don't serve us. We also touch on tonal balance, nutrition, detoxification and mindfulness as ways to address total wellness. Dr. Gamm shares some great tips on how to get started in your own home! Dr. Gamm has been a practicing chiropractor for over 20 years in various regions of the US and has studied various forms of wellness. He has lectured at seminars, chiropractic colleges, major corporations, non-profits and small businesses about how to use simple concepts within health and wellness to transform challenges into significant gains towards participant’s goals.
